How Amazon FBA Sellers Source Genuine Branded Toys from China

If you sell toys on Amazon, your two hardest problems are margin and trust. Branded toys pull demand on their own, but the easy sources either cost too much or can't prove they're genuine. Here's how the three real sourcing paths actually compare, what Amazon inbound needs from your supplier, and the compliance reality every toy importer now faces.

Why FBA toy sellers need a different playbook

Amazon rewards selection and fast fulfillment, but it also scrutinizes toys harder than almost any other category. Three things shape every sourcing decision you make:

  • Margin gets squeezed twice. Once by the marketplace fees, once by the cost of goods. A source that looks "fine" at $8/unit can be unprofitable by the time storage, prep and PPC are paid, so your landed cost matters more than your list price.
  • Authenticity is enforced, not assumed. Amazon can ask for proof of authenticity for any ASIN, and counterfeit or mismatched stock can get a listing or account suspended. "Cheap" from an unverifiable source is the most expensive mistake in this category.
  • Some brands are gated. Certain popular toy brands require approval to sell, and Amazon may ask for invoices from a brand-direct channel to ungating. This is a platform-policy question you verify per brand, not something a supplier can promise away.

So the job isn't "find the cheapest toys." It's "find genuine toys, with paperwork, at a cost that survives fees." That changes which path you pick.

The three sourcing paths compared

Every FBA toy seller is really choosing between one of these. None is "wrong", they trade off margin, proof and effort differently:

PathWhat you getMarginWhat to watch
Brand-direct / first-partyHighest trust, clean invoices that satisfy most ungating, sometimes exclusivesLowest, you pay for the paper trailHigh opening volumes, credit terms you may not qualify for, and many won't serve small cross-border buyers at all
Domestic liquidation / local wholesaleFast, local, low logistics risk; often already US-compliantMedium–low, you're buying someone else's marginSupply is lumpy and unpredictable; you're competing on the same leftover stock as everyone else
China-direct genuine tradeAuthentic branded merch through real trade channels, full commercial invoices, lowest landed costHighest, you remove a middle layerYou must verify the supplier yourself, confirm packaging version, and understand brand gating per ASIN

We operate the third path. The rest of this guide is written from that side of the table, what we're actually asked for by FBA sellers, and what separates a smooth shipment from a frozen one.

What FBA inbound actually requires from your supplier

Amazon doesn't care how you bought the product, it cares that what arrives is the right product, correctly labeled, and safe for the age group. Here's what to line up before you ship:

1. A real commercial invoice

Itemized by SKU, with quantities and values. This is your ownership paper trail, and the document Amazon may request if a listing is ever questioned. We issue full invoices on every order.

2. Children's Product Certificate (CPC)

For toys aimed at under-12s, Amazon expects a CPC backed by third-party lab testing. A genuine supplier must be able to provide the certificate and the underlying test data, not a screenshot.

3. Correct barcodes and labeling

Amazon needs a scannable identifier on every unit or case. We supply the manufacturer UPC/EAN so you can plan labeling; you decide FNSKU vs manufacturer barcode per your FBA setup.

4. Batch / lot traceability

Amazon and CPSC both want to know which production run a unit came from. We record batch numbers per shipment so any future query is a lookup, not a scramble.

On brand gating, the honest part: some toy brands on Amazon are gated, and ungating can require invoices from a brand-direct channel. We provide genuine trade invoices and full batch traceability, but whether a specific brand ungates on a specific account is an Amazon policy decision we can't control or guarantee. Test one brand, one ASIN, before you bet the catalog on it. (We're actively testing this with MGA-family invoices, early signal, not a promise.)

Barcodes that actually matter (and one that doesn't yet)

FBA throws several barcode terms at you. Here's what each one is for, so you ask for the right thing:

CodeWhat it identifiesWho needs it
UPC / EANThe product itself (GS1-issued, brand-level)You + your supplier, it's the product's identity and what listing matching is built on
FNSKUYour unit inside your Amazon inventoryYou, applied at prep; Amazon scans it in the warehouse
Batch / lot numberThe production run a unit came fromYour supplier, needed for safety recalls and authenticity queries
Carton / SSCCThe shipped case for pallet trackingNice to have for LTL/sea freight; not required for small parcel

Practical takeaway: get the UPC/EAN from your supplier up front (we include it on quotes), decide your FNSKU labeling at prep time, and make sure batch numbers are recorded somewhere you can find them later.

The 2026 compliance reality for children's toys

If you import toys into the US, two facts now shape your supplier choice, and they're not optional:

  • CPSC eFiling is mandatory. As of July 8, 2026, US Customs requires importers of children's products to submit CPSC eFiling data at the time of entry. Your supplier must be able to hand you the CPC and the test documentation that feeds it, a genuine channel does this routinely; a sketchy one can't.
  • CPSIA still applies underneath. Lead limits, phthalates, tracking labels and a written CPC are the baseline. "Compliant enough" is not a thing, either the documentation exists or it doesn't.

For the EU/UK (a secondary market for us, approached carefully), the parallel baseline is EN71 testing and CE marking. We can supply the relevant certificates per shipment destination, just tell us where the goods are landing so we send the right file.

This is exactly why our line is genuine or nothing. The compliance paperwork only exists if the product is real. See how we handle authenticity & compliance →

How to start small and stay safe

You don't need a container. You need a clean first test. The same sequence we give every new FBA seller:

Pick 2–3 SKUs you can actually sell

One proven mover (e.g. an L.O.L. or Miniverse line) plus one wildcard. Keep the first order to a few cases, not a pallet.

Request a quote with documentation named

Ask for the UPC/EAN, case pack, packaging version, and confirmation that CPC/EN71 can be supplied. A genuine supplier answers all four without hesitation.

Run one ungating test

Before scaling, try one gated brand/ASIN with the invoice you receive. Read the result, then decide how far to expand.

Verify on receipt

Match barcodes and batch numbers against the paperwork. If it lines up, you now have a repeatable source, not a one-off gamble.

That's the whole loop: small, documented, verified, then scaled. See exactly how ordering works →

💡 Margin tip: the win in China-direct sourcing isn't a lower unit price alone, it's removing a resale layer and keeping the paperwork that protects your account. Cheap without documents is a liability; genuine with documents is an asset you can reorder.

Yes. Stock is shipped China-direct to FBA warehouses, with carton specs and labeling discussed up front so inbound appointments go smoothly. Ask for FBA-ready carton details in your quote.
Do you provide invoices for Amazon ungating?
We provide genuine trade invoices with full batch traceability. Many sellers use them for ungating, but Amazon reviews every case individually and approval is never guaranteed.
What compliance paperwork comes with the toys?
CPC (US) and EN71 (EU) documentation is available on request for the lines we carry. Always request the documents before you confirm an order.
