How to Read a Toy Wholesale Quote

The cheapest unit price on a quote means nothing if the case pack doesn't fit your shelf, the MOQ blows your budget, or the Incoterm hides a freight surprise. This guide breaks down every line of a China-direct toy quote so you can compare offers on equal terms, not just on price.

MOQCase PackEXW vs FOB

Why quote literacy beats chasing the lowest price

Two quotes for the "same" doll can look identical on unit price and still land you in very different places once freight, packing and minimums are in. The buyers who win at wholesale learn to read the whole quote, not just the headline number:

  • Case pack decides your shelf and your shipping cube. A 12-piece case vs a 48-piece case is a different warehouse, a different freight rate, and a different break-even, even at the same unit cost.
  • MOQ decides whether you can even start. A $1.20 unit looks great until the MOQ is 5,000 pieces and your test budget is 300.
  • Incoterm decides who pays what, when. EXW and FOB are not the same landed cost, and confusing them is the most common rookie mistake we see.

This guide maps the lines every serious toy quote should contain, and, more usefully, the questions to ask before you sign.

The line items every quote should show

When we quote, these are the fields we put on the table. If a supplier's quote is missing most of them, that's your first signal:

FieldWhat it meansWhy it matters to you
Unit pricePrice per single toy, usually ex-factoryYour baseline, but never the whole story
MOQ (minimum order qty)Smallest order the supplier will accept, often per SKU or per orderSets your entry cost; ask if it's per SKU or total
Case pack / inner packUnits per export carton (and per inner box if any)Drives shelf packaging, shipping cube and split-ability
Master cartonDimensions, gross weight, units per cartonYou need this to price freight and plan warehouse space
Incoterm (EXW / FOB / CIF)Who arranges and pays for transport at each legEXW = you handle everything from factory; FOB = seller delivers to port
Lead timeProduction + readiness days after depositTells you if it'll make your season or miss it
Documents includedCommercial invoice, CPC/EN71, batch numbersWithout these, customs and platforms block you, see our compliance checklist

Case pack math: the number that quietly controls your margin

A "case pack" is how many units ship in one export carton. It sounds boring; it isn't. Work a quick example:

Units per carton

Say a doll ships 24 per carton. Your shelf might sell in 6-packs, but you receive (and pay freight on) full cartons. Split-friendly inner packing matters if you break cases.

Carton cube & weight

A 24-unit carton at 12 kg and 60×40×40 cm. Multiply by how many cartons fit a container and you get your freight, not the unit price, driving landed cost.

Break-even per unit

Unit cost + (freight ÷ units per carton) + handling. Two quotes at the same unit price but different case packs can differ 8–15% landed. Always compute this.

On our product pages we list Case Pack and MOQ up front precisely so you can run this math before you ask for a quote, no surprises later.

Mixing SKUs in a container or master carton

New buyers rarely want a full container of one SKU. The good news: most China-direct trade allows mixed orders. How it usually works:

  • Mixed master carton. Some lines let you combine several designs in one export carton (assorted). Great for testing which design sells, confirm the assorted ratio with the supplier.
  • Mixed container (LCL / FCL mix). Below a full container, you can consolidate several SKUs or even several brands into one shipment. Ask for the consolidator's cube and the min per SKU.
  • MOQ per mixed SKU. Mixing usually still carries a per-SKU minimum, lower than a full dedicated run, but not zero. Get it in writing.

This is exactly the path behind our category framework: pick 2–3 SKUs in one category, mix them, test small.

Your real "first order" vs the MOQ

MOQ is the supplier's floor; your first order should be your risk ceiling, not their minimum. Our standard for new buyers:

  • Start at or just above MOQ across 2–3 SKUs in one category, enough to get real units and real freight data, not a warehouse you can't move.
  • Request the documented quote, unit price, case pack, master-carton specs, Incoterm and the certificate plan (CPC for the US, EN71/CE for EU/UK) in one sheet.
  • Land, verify, reorder. On arrival, confirm goods, documents and barcode/version match. Only then scale the reorder.
⚠️ Red flags in a quote: price with no case pack or carton spec · MOQ that shifts when you ask for documents · "CPC available" only after you pay · Incoterm left blank · refusal to put lead time in writing. Frequently Asked Questions

What line items should a proper wholesale quote show?
SKU, product description, case pack, unit price, carton dimensions and weight, and lead time. If any line is missing, ask for it before transferring money.
Why does case pack matter so much?
You buy in case multiples, so case pack controls how much cash each order locks in. Mismatched case packs can leave you with slow-moving leftovers.
Can I mix SKUs in one container?
Yes, mixed master cartons are possible for many lines. Confirm the mixing rules per line in your quote.
